Community Vignettes - Upriver Siuslaw Vision Team

Mapleton School District students and staff tending the garden as part of the Upriver Siuslaw Vision Team initiative.

United Way invests in a wide network of programs – addressing day-to-day needs of families now, and creating coalitions to make upstream impacts on community-wide problems. Through our Community Transformation grants, we are funding four cross-sector collaboratives working to create systemic change to complex challenges faced by kids across Lane County.

One of the coalitions that we are funding during the 2023-26 grant cycle is the Upriver Siuslaw Vision Team, based in Mapleton.

I want to thank United Way so much for the gift of capacity, of time, to do this work, and for the spirit of trust that the funding has given... And I want you to feel confident that the resources you’re contributing to United Way are being used for true community impact.
— Courtney Stone, Upriver Vision Coordinator, Mapleton School District Recipient of a 3-year Community Transformation grant

The Upriver Siuslaw Vision team is working to promote community development in the Mapleton area by supporting locally-owned solutions addressing community-identified goals, engaging Mapleton students as the next generation of community builders. Students are designing, implementing, and sustaining a native plant nursery alongside a food production garden, pairing restoration and experiential education in this student-led initiative.

Grant partners in this work include the Mapleton School District, Siuslaw Watershed Council, and Siuslaw Vision.
