United Way — Live United
Volunteering to Improve Health
by Dr. Richard Kincade, PeaceHealth
I have been a long time donor for United Way of Lane County, but had not really engaged as a volunteer until I had the opportunity to participate with the 100% Access Healthcare Coalition. As a primary care provider with Peacehealth Medical Group, I had cared for many vulnerable patients in the Medical Assistance Program, which had been created to provide charity care for Lane County residents.
Through this program, as well as programs within my organization, I have seen the tremendous value of having access to healthcare for people in challenging circumstances. I have had the opportunity to help lead the Community Health Needs Assessment and Improvement Plan process for our community, and have been blessed to see the power of collaboration within a community of people and organizations that care about one another.
Together, volunteers can improve the health of Lane County. United Way has served as an effective convener, facilitator of collective impact and a powerful uniting force across the three impact areas of health, income and education. I am proud to be a part of an organization so strongly dedicated to improving the lives of the people in our community.
