Alexis de Tocqueville Society:  Our most exclusive philanthropists

Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel de Tocqueville gleaned an insightful view of a young America when he visited here in 1831. His observations, readings, and discussions with eminent Americans formed the basis of Democracy in America, a detailed study of US politics published in two volumes in 1835 and 1840.

In recognition of Alexis de Tocqueville's vision of the American spirit of volunteerism for the common good, this special leadership giving program recognizes individuals making an annual contribution of $10,000 or more to United Way. Donors are recognized by United of Lane County as well as by United Way of America which holds exclusive national events for members.

Giving levels for Alexis de Tocqueville donors are:

  1. La Société National – $100,000-$249,999
  2. Ordre de Fraternité – $75,000-$99,999
